Cut your stems to the required length. This allows for maximum water absorption and ensures the stems don’t block water from absorbing. After trimming the stems, immediately place them in water. Some stems can quickly form a scab over fresh cuts when they are exposed to air. This makes it difficult to absorb water. Although some stems do not form this, it is a good rule to simply immerse all flowers in the water right after cutting.
- Any debris that is below the water level should be removed.
Although you can often remove stems easily with your hands (keep reading to find my list of favorite tools), it’s possible to sometimes use scissors or flower pruners. Keep foliage out of the water, as it can cause bacteria growth, which in turn will make your flowers die quicker.
- Clean you’re Vase
You should wash the vase between fresh flowers if you reuse the same vase. Do not rinse the vase, but instead use soap and warm water. The bacteria that have been accumulated from the last arrangement may cause your flowers to die sooner than usual.
- Refreeze The Water Twice A Day.
This extra step can increase the lifespan of your blooms by extending their life span. By changing the water you can remove bacteria. It may be difficult to remove the stems from your vase, depending on how large your arrangement is. For this reason, add fresh water daily to your arrangement to replenish.

- Create Tape Grid or Use Chicken wire.
Sometimes it is difficult to keep your stems in place. A tape grid is a good idea for clear vases. You can also use a sphere made of chicken wire (for more design control) and a tape Grid on opaque vases. This will give your flower arrangements structure.
